The Centre for Manx Studies has launched a project recording the Island’s graveyard memorials.

The project builds on work done by members of the Isle of Man Family History Society, who have already copied down the gravestone transcriptions, information about the memorials themselves, including shape, size, materials and decoration, will be added.

Director of the Centre, Dr Harold Mytum, who is internationally renowned for mortuary archaeology research, said: “This will put the Isle of Man on the map for historical archaeology and the project will allow Manx cultural traditions to be compared with those in other well-studied regions. It is a wonderful example how cutting-edge research can involve student and community.”
