Winning departments celebrate graduation

Two University of Liverpool departments have been celebrating with their students after winning £500 each towards their graduation celebrations in the University’s National Student Survey (NSS) competition.

The Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology won the prize for the most improved NSS response rate after achieving a 13% increase on last year’s response in the department.

The prize for the highest departmental response rate was awarded to the Department of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies (CLAS), after an impressive 93% of students participated in the survey.

The CLAS students, who are graduating this week, were treated to an end of exams celebration with the prize money, while the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology graduates celebrated their success before their ceremony this week at an event in the Crypt Hall of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

This year the University matched its highest ever response rate to the National Student Survey with 75% of final year undergraduates taking part.

The figure, which ties with the record response rate achieved last year, puts the University ahead of the sector average of 69% and places the institution amongst the highest in the country.

Professor Kelvin Everest, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Student Experience, said: “The NSS is an important indicator of student satisfaction and provides the University with a wealth of data that helps us to enhance the student experience. This level of response is an impressive achievement, and gives us a view of student opinion which will directly influence improvements to the University.”
