Students arriving in Liverpool in September will be among the first to experience new and refurbished buildings as part of the University’s £600m investment in its campus.
Students will benefit from the multi-million pound refurbishment of the Guild of Students building. The Guild is home to a host of entertainment venues, meeting and activity rooms and places to eat.
Major upgrades
The city’s second largest music venue, Mountford Hall, has been upgraded with £500k-worth of new equipment, meaning it can once again play host to some of the biggest live acts. The Sphinx bar and ‘Street’ communal area, as well as the basement, have been opened up for societies with new rooms which include a cinema and dance studio. There is even a roof garden designed by students.
A short walk away from the Guild, Crown Place, a £62 million new accommodation site, will open to its first group of students.
The campus developments also encompass the two main libraries. The Harold Cohen Library is getting a £2.6 million refurbishment ready for the new academic year. For students this means an additional 220 study spaces, eight new group study areas and more plug sockets for laptops. Overall, the building is being made more attractive, with a new reception area and an increased number of social spaces.
The work follows a recent million pound investment in the Sydney Jones Library which added new self-service areas to make it easier for visitors to access its collections.
World class education environment
School of English students have recently moved into the historic Abercromby Square following a £2 million refurbishment and newly improved buildings for the architecture and communication and media studies departments.
Veterinary science students at the Leahurst campus are benefiting from a new curriculum with a new ‘cow lab’ to help them practice clinical skills before working on the University farms later in their course.
Developments are continuing with the creation of a £90 million student village in south Liverpool and, allowing the University to continue to offer a world-class education environment for students to live, study and socialise.
