The University of Liverpool’s Department of Music has established a festival that showcases local and guest artists from the world of contemporary music.

‘Open Circuit’, will be headlined by Ensemble 10/10, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s award-winning contemporary music group led by internationally renowned conductor Clark Rundell.  The concert features recent compositions by University of Liverpool composers, Ben Hackbarth and Matthew Fairclough, for instruments and electronic sound.

The evening will also include a multimedia event, featuring acclaimed cellist Oliver Coates playing music for cello, electronic sound and projected video.

Other artists who will take part in the festival include the Elysian String Quartet, Markus Popp and Bristol-based electronic producer, Vessel, who will play alongside Immix Ensemble, one of the UK’s most exciting new music groups

Music innovation

Immix Ensemble focus on collaborations with innovative musical voices from across Liverpool and the North West.  In addition, the festival also features a concert of ‘acousmatic’ electronic music, a workshop of young composers’ music with Ensemble 10/10 and a screening of audio-visual works by various artists from Liverpool and beyond.

Professor Michael Spitzer, Head of the Department of Music, said: “The Open Circuit Festival will showcase the work of forward-thinking composers, songwriters, bands and sound artists from the region and wider afield.

“It provides a unique opportunity for students and the community to engage with the performing arts on campus.  I urge anybody interested in cutting-edge music and art to come along to the Festival.”

`Open Circuit’ is a ten-day music festival that will take place from Saturday, 18 October 2014 until Friday, 24 October 2014 in the University’s Victoria Gallery & Museum.  All events are free but seats to select concerts can be reserved for £2.
