£250K donation towards Child Health Research Centre

The University of Liverpool has received a £250,000 donation from the Garfield Weston Foundation towards the development of a new research and education centre at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

The gift will help fund construction of the new facility which will enable researchers to develop safer, better medicines for children to use in the NHS and throughout the world. It will also help give children in the North West greater access to emerging life-saving technologies and provide facilities that will attract outstanding researchers to Liverpool.

More than £15M has already been secured to support the second stage of the new £25M centre which is due to open in summer 2015, alongside the new hospital.

The Garfield Weston Foundation is a family-founded, grant-making trust which has been supporting charities across the UK for over 50 years. Established in 1958 by Canadian businessman W. Garfield Weston (1898-1978), Garfield Weston is one of the largest charitable funders in the world.

The Foundation has supported the University in the past with grants towards the Centre for Better Births at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital and the Small Animal Teaching Hospital at Leahurst Campus.
