Event – How Should We Value Nature in a Human-Dominated World?

Professor of Biodiversity and Ecosystems and Director of the University College London Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research (CBER) Georgina Mace will be presenting at a ‘Adaptation to Environmental Change Event’ on Wednesday, 10 May at the Life Sciences Building.

Nature conservation has traditionally focussed on preservation and protection. However, this approach is increasingly challenged as the impact of human activities on land and in the sea continues to spread and intensify.

At the same time, people depend on nature for material goods, as well as for health, recreation and inspiration.

Professor Mace’s research concerns measuring the trends and consequences of biodiversity loss and change with a particular focus on the science and policy interface for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management.

Her presentation ‘How Should We Value Nature in a Human-Dominated World?’ will show how the focus of conservation has shifted from preserving biodiversity (primarily species & habitats and their spatial patterns), to maintaining form and function, adaptability and resilience for the future. But this requires new tools and techniques for measuring and conserving nature.

The FREE event will be taking place at 3pm on Wednesday, 10 May in Lecture Theatre 3, Life Sciences Building, Crown Street.

A post-seminar Reception will also take place in Seminar Room 2, 2nd Floor Life Sciences Building.
