Philip Pullman launches new novel ahead of Liverpool Literary Festival presents showcase

Best-selling author, Philip Pullman launches his new work, Book of Dust tomorrow a month ahead of his Liverpool Literary Festival presents appearance on November 23.

The His Dark Materials writer will showcase his new publication in conversation with University of Liverpool Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Cultural Engagement, Professor Dinah Birch in the spectacular Concert Room at St George’s Hall.

La Belle Sauvage is the first volume of the new Book of Dust trilogy and brings readers back into the world created in His Dark Materials but sets the action 10 years before, when main character, Lyra is still an infant. Subsequent volumes in the series will be set 10 years after the events of His Dark Materials.

The Liverpool Literary Festival presents’ showcase follows on from last year’s very successful Literary Festival and is the second of two such events, after the University’s new Chancellor Colm Tóibín reading from his latest novel, House of Names in September.

Philip Pullman was named one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945 by The Times and was selected the eleventh most influential person in British culture in a poll for the BBC in 2004.

The first book of the His Dark Materials series, Northern Lights, won a Carnegie Medal, the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, a British Book Award, and the Carnegie of Carnegies Award 2007. Following on from this, The Amber Spyglass won both the Whitbread Prize for best children’s book and the Whitbread Book of the Year – the first children’s book to do so.

Philip has also published many other books, not least the best-selling The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ and Grimm Tales.

Liverpool Literary Festival returns in full next year, over the weekend of 19th – 21st October 2018.
