10 ways to stay green on campus

  1. Ask your lecturers to pledge support

Ask your lecturers to pledge to support the SDG Teach-in from 19-23 February. ‘Sustainable Development Goals’  are a set of 17 ‘global goals’ which set out targets to end poverty, protect the planet, and achieve prosperity for all by 2030. Six years of NUS-led research have indicated that 60% of students, regardless of discipline, want to learn more about sustainability. This SDG Teach-in gives students and staff the chance to start the conversation.

  1. Cycle around campus

The Guild website has some great information on the best and most inexpensive ways to get yourself cycling your way around campus. You can hire a bike at half price from the Guild or from City Bike.

  1. Make less waste and save money!

Bring your own mug to Starbucks or Costa and get your drink at a reduced price!  £3 meal deals are cheap and easy but have a much higher environmental cost, try to bring a packed lunch instead.

  1. Use less plastic

Use re-usable water bottles filled from campus fountains instead of buying plastic bottles and say no to plastic straws. Instead of using throw-away plastic bags, invest in a reusable, light-weight tote that you can carry around campus.

  1. Recycle

All University buildings have clearly labelled bins for recycling. Dispose of your waste responsibly and make sure you’re using the correct bins.

  1. Volunteer

Grow stuff sustainably and keep bees. The Guild has a range of fun and rewarding volunteering opportunities which can help you to make a difference.

  1. Sign up for a Green Event

If you’re looking for something a bit out of the ordinary to get involved with, the Guild’s event page has a range of free activities that might interest you. Try something new; make some vegan chocolate, discover the Guild’s wonderful rooftop garden or visit Formby’s famous Red Squirrel reserve.

  1. Leave Liverpool Tidy

Donate things you don’t want to the Guild’s textile banks and Leave Liverpool Tidy. This project aims to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill when students graduate or move out of accommodation over summer.

  1. Join a Guild Society

Join one of the growing numbers of Guild Societies that care about being Green and are signed up to the Green Guild Flag award.

  1. Take the Green Pledge!

Demonstrate your support for a greener University and commit to making a difference.  Help your University reduce its carbon footprint and make positive changes towards sustainability.
