Incidents in Crown Street Park – Students and staff urged to be vigilant

Students and staff are being urged to be vigilant following a number of assaults in Crown Street Park near to campus.

Three cyclists have reported being assaulted as they were riding through the park and a fourth has reported an attempted robbery. The incidents all took place on Thursday, 15 February in the early evening around 6pm. The victims did not suffer any serious injuries.

Our Campus Support Team is working closely with the Police who are undertaking a proactive investigation into the full circumstances of all the incidents.

If any staff or students have any information about either incident, please contact Merseyside Police on Twitter (@MerPolCC) or call Merseyside Police on 101. Alternatively, Campus Support can be reached on 43252 from an internal phone or on 0151 794 3252 from a mobile or external phone.

Rare and unusual

Syd Cottle, Director of Estates Management, said: “I must stress that incidents of this kind are rare and it is extremely unusual for four such incidents to take place in a short space of time.

“We have a proactive and vigilant Campus Support Team in order to support a safe and secure crime-free environment for the University community. Despite these incidents being off campus, we are working with Merseyside Police to increase patrols of the area – particularly around Crown Street to provide further reassurance to students and staff.

“We would advise all cyclists and pedestrians to be alert when near to or in Crown Street Park and if possible to take an alternative route.

“Our existing Chaperone service is also available for staff or students to request a member of the Campus Support Team to accompany them on the campus to their car or accommodation. This is subject to the availability of our Campus Support staff at any given time but should you wish to use the Chaperone service please call the team on 43252 from an internal phone or 0151 794 3252 from a mobile or external phone.

“I would also like to remind both students and staff to call the Campus Support Team immediately should you see any suspicious activity on campus. The team can be reached on 2222 from an internal phone or 0151 794 2222 from a mobile or external phone.”
