The University of Liverpool is among the top 50 higher education institutions in the country, rising seven places to continue its march up the Guardian University Guide rankings.
The shift from 57th to 50th builds on a ten place improvement in last year’s table.
There were also notable successes at subject level, with two areas; Anatomy and Physiology, and Pharmacy and Pharmacology both being ranked first in the UK.
Nursing and Midwifery was rated the second best of the 71 programmes of its type across the country. Veterinary Science was rated third in the subject area and the top placed in England. Meanwhile Forensic Science and Archaeology came in fourth, and Health Professions in sixth.
Other highlights include Physics (tenth), Architecture (12th) and Chemistry (14th).
University of Liverpool Vice Chancellor, Professor Dame Janet Beer said: “This welcome rise is very much down to the commitment of all our staff in delivering high quality, innovative teaching, support and services for students.”
Topping the Guardian University Guide for 2020, and maintaining a position it has held now for four years, is Cambridge University.
But Oxford University slipped out of the top two this year, with St Andrews rising a spot to replace it.
The other universities making up the top five are Loughborough and Durham, respectively.
The highest ranked North West university is Lancaster, in joint seventh with Imperial University.
