Study Abroad in Georgia: Making the most of the opportunities

Twenty students have been given a taste of what Study Abroad Programmes can offer after spending a week at the University of Georgia in the USA.

The students, who are all part of the University’s widening participation cohort, were taken on the trip to give them some insight into what is possible as part of our Study Abroad Programmes and to encourage them to apply for future opportunities.

The students stayed on campus in University of Georgia accommodation and were given a taste of life in the USA with trips including a tour of the 92,000+ capacity Sanford Stadium, which is home to the Georgia Bulldogs.

The students also took part in lectures on ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ and ‘Politics in the US’, as well as a class on ‘Media in the US’, with a focus on fake news and reality TV. There was also time for numerous cultural activities including a powerful and moving visit to the Center for Civil and Human Rights.

The students explored many of Georgia’s ‘must visits’, including the Centennial Olympic Park, Zoo Atlanta, a tour of CNN Studios and a visit to Coca-Cola World.

The trip was a new opportunity for all involved. Prior to the trip, a number of the students had never travelled independently, whilst a quarter had never travelled outside of the EU.

The feedback from students following the weeklong experience has been overwhelmingly positive with the majority saying they are now likely to apply for future Study Abroad opportunities.
