Top tips: Studying effectively from home

Studying from home

Whether you have a house full or you are isolating on your own, studying from home can be challenging. To help make things easier, we’ve pulled together four top tips to help you create a positive space where you can focus and get ready to work.

  1. Create a study space for you

If possible, try to create a separate space to work in that’s away from distractions. If it’s a shared space like a kitchen table, try to agree times when it will be used just by you. When working from home it can be hard to remain focussed, so make sure you’re comfortable and your space is tidy to help avoid being distracted. Remember that unlike in the library or a study space on campus, you’re in control, so make sure the temperature and lighting are right for you, and that everything you need is at hand.

  1. Plan your day

It’s important to set out a timetable that works for you. Different tasks require different levels of concentration, so adjust your schedule to make sure it fits in with when you’re feeling your best or have the least distractions. Try to concentrate on what you’re doing, and don’t be tempted to multi-task – save any chores or eating until after you’ve watched your online lecture so that you can take notes and give whatever you’re doing your full attention. Don’t feel like you need to be sitting down to work from 9-5, and be flexible.

  1. Take a break

It’s really important to make sure you take time to rest. Don’t spend hours on end staring at a screen and take regular time out to have a walk around, do some chores, or have a snack. This will keep your energy and concentration levels up, ensure you’re productive, and stop you burning out.

  1. Keep socialising

It’s easy to feel isolated at the moment, so it’s important to make sure that you keep in touch with family, friends, and university staff. Use social media, online chats, phone calls, whatever works for you. Reaching out and collaborating with other students will keep you connected and feeling part of a bigger community.
