Services, support and activities available for students staying on campus over the winter break

We understand that some of you will be staying on campus over the winter break. During this time the University remains committed to providing services and activities that will allow you to enjoy a great experience and access support should you need it.

Please note: if you are remaining on campus over the break and have not informed the University yet, we ask that you complete this travel survey to tell us of your intentions. This will allow the University to be able to contact you with further support.


Services and facilities

Below you’ll find an overview of the opening times for campus services and facilities over the winter break, however, you can also access further University support and services online.

Libraries

Bookable study spaces in both the Harold Cohen and Sydney Jones libraries will open from 10am to midnight daily until Sunday, 20 December although it is not possible to browse material and the Grove Wing of the Sydney Jones or the stacks in the Harold Cohen.

From 21 December to 3 January, the library will be extending its usual holiday period opening times to provide more study spaces for students:

  • Monday, 21 – Thursday, 24 December: 10am till 8pm
  • Christmas Day: CLOSED
  • Saturday, 26 – Thursday, 31 December: 10am till 8pm
  • New Year’s Day: CLOSED
  • Saturday, 2 and Sunday, 3 January: 10am till 8pm

Borrowing books via Click and Collect will continue in both libraries till Sunday, 20 December. The Click and Collect service will not be available throughout the winter break and will resume on Monday, 4 January.

All of our online resources such as databases, e-journals and e-texts will continue to be available 24 hours a day.

Face-to-face help desks in the libraries are closed for the moment, but you can access support via our online enquiry service.

The library has also created a guide to using the library for students who are self-isolating.

Sport Liverpool

The Sports & Fitness Centre is open, and subject to Government guidance, some facilities will remain open on reduced hours over the winter break period.

The centre will only be fully closed on the following days; 25, 26, 28 December 2020 and 1 January 2021. Opening hours are as follows:

  • Wednesday, 23 December – Sports & Fitness Centre – Gym: 2.00pm-8.00pm
  • Thursday, 24 December – Sports & Fitness Centre – Gym & Swimming: 7.00am – 1.00pm
  • Friday, 25 – Saturday, 26 December: CLOSED
  • Sunday, 27 December – Sports & Fitness Centre – Gym: 2.00pm – 8.00pm
  • Monday, 28 December: CLOSED
  • Tuesday, 29 December – Sports & Fitness Centre – Gym & Swimming: 7.00am – 1.00pm
  • Wednesday, 30 December – Sports & Fitness – Gym & Swimming: 2.00pm – 8.00pm
  • Thursday, 31 December – Sports & Fitness – Gym: 7.00am -1.00pm
  • Friday, 1 January – CLOSED

Liverpool Guild of Students

Liverpool Guild of Students opening dates are listed below. You can find out more about the events the Guild are running in the lead up to Christmas, festive celebrations you can take part in across the city, and what support and services are available to you during the holidays by visiting their website.

Starbucks, The Street and The Courtyard

  • Closed from 24 – 28 December 2020
  • Open 29, 30 and 31 December 2020 (bars will be closed but the spaces will be open to socialise/study)
  • Closed from 1 – 4 January 2021

Mountford Hall, Guild Shop, Online Shop, Finance Office, Advice Centre and Reception

  • Closed from 18 December 2020 – 4 January 2021

Halls

Anybody who wishes to remain in Halls for the winter break, or part of it, is more than welcome to do so. Halls will remain open for the entirety of the break and the Halls Life Team have some activities planned to help keep you entertained. How to access support

Over the winter break period, Student Services will be providing a Wellbeing drop-in at the Sydney Jones library from 10am to 2pm on Monday, 21 December 2020 to Wednesday, 23 and Tuesday, 29 to Thursday, 31 December 2020. Our Counselling Service will be offering a social day on Tuesday, 29 December for anyone on campus to simply come down for a chat, coffee and pre wrapped cakes!

Students can also contact the COVID Guidance and Travel Plans helpline if you have any issues linked to COVID that you need support with. This includes welfare issues, accessing food and essentials boxes for those self-isolating, and travel advice. Students can call the team on 0151 795 9500. Lines are currently open Monday-Sunday 10am to 4.30pm. Opening hours during winter break are as follows:

  • Wednesday, 23 December: 10am to 4.30pm
  • Thursday, 24 to Monday, 28 December: Closed
  • Tuesday, 29 December: 11am to 3pm
  • Wednesday, 30 December: 11am to 3pm
  • Thursday, 31 December to Friday, 1 January: Closed
  • Saturday, 2 January onwards: 10am to 4.30pm

Emergency and out of hours support

For support on mental health and wellbeing over the winter break you can contact the following organisations:

  • Student Space offers students wellbeing advice and support. They can be contacted by: Text ‘student’ to 85258 24 hours a day 7 days a week, phone 0808 1895260 – 4pm to 11pm
  • Samaritans can be contacted 24/7 on 116123 or you can email jo@samaritans.org and you will get a response within 24 hours
  • Papyrus can be contacted on 0800 068 4141 every day 9am to 12 midnight
  • Text SHOUT on 85258 who offer 24/7 text mental health support and are open 24/7

Please remember, if you find you or someone you know is in an emergency situation you should contact 999 immediately.


COVID-19 testing

Our ‘with symptoms’ test centre will be open on selected dates over the winter break for anyone experiencing COVID symptoms. See opening hours and further information here.

You can also access a COVID-19 test, whether you have symptoms or not, via the Liverpool City Council testing programme. Find out more, including where your nearest test site is, on their webpages.


Faith services

Faith services will remain open over the winter break and you can find more information about accessing these here.


Activities

Check out the Support and Activities hub for many virtual and in-person activities and events to get involved with over the winter break.

If you have a little bit of time on your hands why not enter one of the competitions we currently have open to all students, from writing to photography there is something for everyone to get creative with!

We also recommend that you download the new ‘My Liverpool’ app – the app has been designed to enhance your experience whilst studying at the University of Liverpool and can also provide lots of useful information, support and activities over the winter break. On the app you can view events, create a personalised planner and access information and support. If you turn on the app notifications and location tracker you will be sent new information as it announced.
