Vote in Liverpool’s local elections: 4 May 2023

Liverpool City Council’s local elections are taking place on Thursday, 4 May 2023 and, as a student, you may be able to vote while you are living in Liverpool.

Can I register twice – at home and at university?

For local council elections in England – like the election taking place in Liverpool during May – you can choose to vote at the election taking place at your term-time address and your home address, as long as these addresses are in different council areas.

Remember, you can’t vote more than once in elections taking place on the same day for UK Parliament elections, UK referendums or London Assembly and London Mayoral elections.

How do I register?

If you would like to vote in the elections taking place in May, you need to register by Monday, 17 April.

The easiest way to register is by completing the online form on the gov.uk website.  It’s simple to do and should only take around five minutes.

You can check to see if you’re already registered to vote on the Electoral Commission website.

Am I eligible to register to vote?

To register to vote, you must be:

  • a UK or Irish citizen
  • a qualifying Commonwealth citizen living in the UK
  • an EU citizen living in the UK
  • aged 16 or over (but you can’t vote until you’re 18 years old)

You can find out if you’re eligible to vote on the Electoral Commission website.

Voter ID

From Thursday, 4 May 2023 everyone voting in England will need to show a photo ID at polling stations in some elections.
