Applications for our Year Abroad, Semester Abroad and Year in China programmes close this Sunday (23 February 2025) at 11.59pm.
Unsure how to make your application stand out? Lily, one of Global Opportunities Ambassadors, spent a Year Abroad at University of Technology Sydney in Australia and has given her top seven tips for making your application stand out, below.
Applying for any Global Opportunity is exciting; however, it can be competitive. A strong application will increase your chances of securing your preferred destination. Here’s how to make yours stand out:
- Research
Start by searching for a destination and program that aligns with both your academic and personal goals. You can view the opportunities available to you by using the search tool on the Global Opportunities webpages. Once you’ve chosen a destination/university, carefully research its culture, and opportunities. Link this information to your personal values in your application to clearly explain why you want to study there.
- Be Open-Minded
Don’t fixate on just one location – every Global Opportunity is once in a lifetime. Keep an open mind, and you may discover an incredible experience in a place you hadn’t initially considered.
- Take Your Time
Spend time writing your answers, ensuring your application is personal and specific. This will help make your application stand out amongst more basic applications.
- Be Authentic and Enthusiastic
Show genuine enthusiasm about the opportunity while creating your application. Be truthful about your motivations and how studying abroad will benefit you.
- Use the Word Count Wisely
Every word should add value – be clear, concise, and impactful.
- Prioritise Your Grades
Your university grades count towards your ranking score! Make sure you keep your grades up to ensure you have the best chance at securing your preferred opportunity. If you don’t meet the academic requirement, you won’t be eligible for the programme. Click here to find out how applications are scored.
- Proofread Before Submitting
Proofread for clarity of points to ensure your application is coherent. A polished application shows attention to detail and professionalism, helping to increase your overall application score.
