University Hardship Fund

The University Hardship Fund (UHF) is open for applications from all students dealing with ongoing financial issues, as well as one-off unexpected costs.

If you are a UK student, you can apply to the Fund for help with essential expenditure such as rent or bills. You can also use the Fund to support you with a one-off cost that you couldn’t have foreseen and is causing you financial hardship, such as additional travel home due to family illness or unexpected caring responsibilities.

If you are an international student, you can apply to the fund for exceptional costs or financial emergencies that you couldn’t have foreseen and only if this is causing you financial hardship. As an international student, you’ll also need to demonstrate that before starting your course, you had sufficient finances in place to fund both your tuition fees and living costs.

International students must have contacted International Advice and Guidance on iagteam@liverpool.ac.uk before you apply to the Fund.

For all students, the UHF can’t be used to help pay tuition fees, regardless of your circumstances.

Awards from the fund are normally made on a grant basis and are therefore non-repayable.

Guidance is available to help you decide whether or not to make an application on the following webpage: www.liverpool.ac.uk/studentsupport/money-advice/university-hardship-fund/

What’s the application process?

If you decide to apply, the Money Advice and Guidance Team will look over your income and expenditure and advise you on any student loans, grants or other income you may be entitled to before assessing your application.

Applications normally take 20 working days to process (providing that you provide all the documentation to support your application), but at busy times the assessment may take longer, so it is important to apply in good time if you are experiencing financial hardship.

Further information about how to apply to the University Hardship Fund is available on our webpages.
