Spotlight: Alumni Volunteering

In this team spotlight we’re introducing Victoria Gilmore, Volunteer Engagement Officer (Pictured), who is a key contact within the University for Alumni Volunteering.

The Alumni Relations team engage our global alumni community, creating meaningful opportunities for alumni to give back. In turn, this work enhances the student experience, increases employability and strengthens the University’s reputation.

Here, Victoria shares insights into her work, the impact of alumni volunteering, and ways colleagues from across the University can collaborate.

Can you share an overview of your role?

I am part of the Development and Alumni Relations team (DART) within External Relations. I support the delivery of the volunteer programme, which can range from identifying guest speakers, liaising with alumni to match volunteer opportunities, and ensuring volunteering is recorded and celebrated through our alumni communications and stewardship initiatives. It’s always encouraging to see that alumni are willing to give back their time to support students, sharing their journeys (both highs and lows) and opening their networks.

If you’re looking to involve alumni in your work, you can submit a request via our Alumni Request Form or find out more about us on the Meet the Team page.

What do you do?

Each year, thousands of our alumni generously contribute their time and expertise to support the University of Liverpool. We facilitate a range of volunteer opportunities, including:

  • Mentoring students in-person and online
  • Speaking on alumni panels for employability and student recruitment initiatives
  • Providing testimonials for marketing and student recruitment materials
  • Participating in University advisory boards, including alumni associations
  • Offering work placements or advertising graduate-level positions

During the 2023-24 academic year alone, nearly 3,000 alumni volunteers contributed over 9,500 hours to support the experience and employability of current students and the University’s global reputation.

How to support our work

To ensure that we recognise and celebrate these contributions, we want to hear from colleagues across the University who collaborate with alumni volunteers. By sharing your alumni engagement activities with us, you help:

Enhance Recognition: your insights help us highlight and celebrate alumni contributions through University communications, events, and awards.

Improve Engagement: by maintaining an up-to-date record of alumni activity, we can deepen relationships and create even more impactful engagement opportunities.

Enable Collaboration: we can support you in reaching alumni more effectively and identify valuable connections for your initiatives.

Strengthen Institutional Impact: demonstrating alumni involvement reinforces the University’s reputation and nurtures a culture of giving back.

If you have recently worked with alumni volunteers or are planning an alumni engagement activity, please complete the Alumni Request Form to let us know how we can support you. You can also contact Victoria to discuss potential collaborations.
