Student blog: My journey from Liverpool undergrad to postgrad student

Isra Mohammed - PG student

As part of Postgrad Online Open Week, we’re handing over to one of our postgrad students, Isra, to hear about her experience of making the jump from undergrad to postgrad here at Liverpool.

Choosing the right path

When I graduated with a degree in International Relations from the University of Liverpool, I was underwhelmed. At 18, it seemed like the right choice, but my interest faded over the years. Meanwhile, I found myself drawn to marketing—an industry I felt connected to, thanks to my not-so-healthy shopping addiction and a student loan that enabled it.

Now, I’m studying here for a master’s in Digital Marketing and Analytics, a course that allows me to combine my analytical skills with my passion for marketing. This course has not only enhanced my skills but also provided valuable industry experience, increasing my employability and leaving me feeling more satisfied with my overall university experience

Why I stayed in Liverpool

Ultimately, I decided to stay in Liverpool because I fell in love with the city. From the universally known music scene to quaint eatery spots on the likes of Lark Lane, you truly never fall short of something to do here. Staying here provided me with the familiarity I needed to adjust to the demands of postgrad life, which is much more intense.

This master’s is like nothing I had done before. With my undergraduate, I got away with only going to the beloved Sydney Jones during exam season. Now I’m here almost every day, as there is so much to do. Despite the workload, I’m glad I pursued this master’s as this has been my favourite year of university.

Overcoming challenges

When contemplating this master’s, I was worried about feeling lonely with most of my friends moving away and I wasn’t involved in any sports or societies. I quickly proved myself capable. I live with four of my best friends I have known since my first year here and have made new friends through my course. I also became more familiar with the staff here.

In October, I suffered from a damaged nerve and needed support with writing my exams. The support team was incredible and reaching out to my lecturers for support was something I was afraid to do previously. These experiences have made my transition run smoothly and helped me develop a solid routine, something I failed in my three years of undergrad.

Learning to embrace my own path

It is easy to compare your life as a master’s student to those who chose to travel or work after graduation. I struggled with this as I felt I made the wrong choice as I remained in education after most people had left. Eventually, I realised everyone’s path after graduation is different and that different doesn’t always mean wrong.

Now I am proud of my choice and confident I made the right choice. I hate to admit that at the age of 22, I am quite shy and at times lack confidence. The teaching style in marketing is much more interactive compared to IR. Through group discussions and teamwork, I have become more comfortable speaking in large groups.

Balancing studies and work

Alongside my master’s, I also have a part-time job as a student content creator for the University. To challenge myself, I took on roles that pushed me out of my comfort zone, such as featuring on socials and doing the infamous on-campus interviews.

This is how I’ve funded my year since it’s a completely different student loan situation – there’s no maintenance loan this time. This was another hard adjustment as someone who would previously have a package arriving every day and an iced coffee in every lecture. I have learned how to budget and that there actually is food at home.

Advice for future master’s students

For those considering a master’s, my advice is to go for it! Sure, it’s a lot more work with less free time and money, but you’ll never be a student again, so make the most of it. You’ll grow as a person and gain more than just another degree. It’s a chance to make new friends, explore career options and develop valuable skills in your personal and professional life. If you decide to stay in Liverpool, even better. You get to extend your studies and enjoy an extra summer with Sefton Park on your doorstep (along with the masters’ summer term).
