Students with Varsity trophy

In a thrilling showcase of athleticism and spirit, the University of Liverpool claimed victory over Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) at the 2025 Varsity with an impressive 92-57 score.

Each year, students, staff, and alumni come together to support their teams in the Varsity competition. From basketball and football to equestrian and rugby, Varsity highlights the diverse talents of student-athletes across a packed multi-day schedule, drawing hundreds of spectators from both universities.

This year’s win marks a historic milestone –  the tenth consecutive Varsity title for the University of Liverpool.

The rivalry and the tradition of Varsity

Varsity is one of the most anticipated fixtures in the university calendar, pitting Liverpool’s two universities against each other across a wide range of sports. For more than 30 years, the University of Liverpool and LJMU have competed for this prestigious title, turning the event into one of the most fiercely contested and widely supported traditions on campus.

The 2025 victory

The 2025 Varsity was a true display of the University of Liverpool’s sporting strength, reflecting the depth of talent and commitment within our athletic programme.

Highlights from the three-day event included a dramatic comeback from the Men’s Futsal team, who overturned a 4-1 deficit to win 5-4, and an impressive 3-1 victory for the Women’s Football team against LJMU – a side that’s posed tough challenges in recent years.

A further highlight were the outstanding back-to-back wins in the men’s and women’s rugby union matches, held at Waterloo Rugby Club, whose warm hospitality has become a much-loved part of the Varsity experience.
