Knowing what to expect on the day of your exam(s) is hugely important as it will help you to enter an exam room feeling as prepared as possible, with no surprises.
It’s also critical that you know how to conduct yourself before and during an exam, so you ensure you’re following the rules of our Code of Practice of Assessment.
Here’s a quick lowdown of what will happen once you arrive on campus for your exam/assessment:
📌 Check your personalised exam timetable before you arrive on campus so you know which building and room your exam is in, don’t be tempted to just follow friends or course mates as they may be sitting their exam in a different location
***
🕛 Arrive at your exam room and be waiting outside at least 15 minutes before your exam is due to start
***
👂Listen carefully to the announcement made outside of your exam room by the Chief Invigilator of your exam as there are important instructions you need to follow before and once you enter the room
***
📴 Whilst still outside, turn off your phone*, smart watch, smart ring, ear buds, headphones or any other device you may have (*some computer-based exams will require you to keep your phone on until you have logged on and completed DUO sign-in, the announcement will make this clear at the start)
***
🤳Put your phone and other devices in your coat or bag, or be ready to put them under your chair in the exam room as they must not be on your person, even when switched off
***
🔢 Enter the exam room in silence and take the laminated desk number the invigilator hands you
***
🧥 There will be a designated area to leave your bags and coats, these items are not allowed at your desk. There are only a limited number of items you’re allowed to take to your desk (desk number, photo ID card, stationery and other permitted exam equipment, clear water bottle etc) and the outside announcement will make clear what is permitted and what’s not in the case of your exam
***
🪪 Find the desk corresponding to the number on your laminated card and take a seat, fill out the white seat card and the front page of your answer paper immediately and place the seat card and your photo ID, in the corner of your desk
***
🪑 If you still have your phone or any other device on you, ensure it is turned off and placed under your chair
***
📢 Listen carefully to the announcement made inside your exam room by the Chief Invigilator, which will include instructions about your exam paper, time allocated to complete the paper and the ID check that will take place by invigilators during the exam
***
⏱️ The invigilator will announce when you can start your exam and a clock will be visible at the front of the room for you to check the time
***
🙋 Have a question or need to speak to someone? Raise your hand and wait for the invigilator to reach your desk. You are not allowed to leave the exam room during the first and last 30 minutes of the exam. If you need to leave the room and the invigilator agrees, you must leave in silence and not try to communicate with anyone else in the room or access any kind of device or materials whilst you are away
What happens in the event of alleged misconduct?
If an invigilator suspects one or more incident of misconduct from a student in the exam room, this will be reported and will likely lead to an investigation by the University. You will have an opportunity to take part in the investigation and you will be supported through this process by the Guild of Students. An investigation will not impact on you continuing with your exams as normal.
There is more information about conduct during examinations on the Student Services webpages.
We wish you lots of luck for your exams and assessments.
