On Thursday 1 May the University of Liverpool Athletic Union came together for one of the biggest celebrations in the sporting calendar as 510 students, staff, coaches, and guests gathered at the iconic Anfield Stadium for the 2026 AU Awards Dinner.
Set against the backdrop of one of football’s most historic venues, the evening was a celebration of everything that makes sport at the University of Liverpool so special – achievement, commitment, teamwork, leadership, and community.
From league titles and cup runs to charity fundraising, volunteering, and unforgettable club moments, the event recognised the incredible dedication shown across the Athletic Union throughout the year. With representatives from clubs across the university filling the room, the atmosphere throughout the evening reflected the passion and pride that student sport continues to generate at Liverpool.
The Awards Dinner also welcomed members of the University’s senior leadership team, giving them the opportunity to see first-hand the scale, impact, and strength of the Athletic Union community. Their presence highlighted the growing recognition of the important role sport plays within the wider student experience, not only in competition and performance, but in wellbeing, belonging, leadership, and lifelong friendships.
Throughout the evening, guests celebrated the achievements of students and clubs across a total of 13 awards, recognising excellence both on and off the field. From individual leadership awards, to exceptional sporting performances and club development, the awards showcased the huge range of talent and hard work that exists within the AU.
The celebration was about far more than trophies alone. It was a reminder of what university sport truly represents: early morning training sessions, Wednesday away trips, packed socials, volunteering efforts, and the friendships formed through being part of a club. Every athlete, committee member, coach, official, and volunteer contributed to making this year such a success.
The energy in the room only grew as awards were announced throughout the night, with clubs proudly celebrating one another’s achievements and applauding the individuals who have made a lasting impact on student sport this year.

With more than 500 attendees coming together from a sporting community of over 5,000 students, the evening was a powerful reflection of the strength, passion, and sense of belonging that sport brings to university life.
