The University of Liverpool is joining Liverpool City Council, Liverpool John Moores University, and other organisations across the city, in a shared commitment to tackling climate change and creating a more sustainable future, in Liverpool’s first annual Climate Action Week.
Taking place from 22-26 June, the event is guided by the theme ‘Our City. Our Climate. Our Future.’ and celebrates the action already taking place across Liverpool while encouraging greater collaboration between organisations, communities and individuals.
Addressing our environmental footprint
With a large estate, and a community of more than 30,000 staff and students, our Sustainability Strategy sets out how we are working to reduce our environmental footprint.
Supporting plans include the recently launched Energy Strategy 2031+, which represents an important step in delivering the University’s net zero commitments.
Launching a New Waste and Resources Management Plan
To mark the start of Climate Action Week, we are launching our new Waste and Resources Management Plan, setting out an ambitious framework to reduce waste, maximise reuse and recycling, and support the transition towards a circular economy across our campuses.
Taking a data-led approach, the plan focuses on priority waste streams based on their environmental impact, volume and cost, while supporting the University’s wider commitments to net zero carbon. It builds on the success of the University’s previous Waste Management Plan, which helped deliver a 48% reduction in general waste sent for incineration with energy recovery and supported initiatives such as Warp It, the University’s reuse platform, which has generated savings of more than £370,000.
Supporting climate action through research
The University is also helping to address climate challenges through its research, innovation and collaboration. The Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainability Research (ICSR) brings together expertise from across the University to develop solutions to some of society’s most pressing sustainability challenges, including climate change, energy, biodiversity and social justice.
The University is also supporting Liverpool’s wider net zero ambitions through collaborative initiatives such as Realising Net Zero Liverpool (RNZL), an Innovate UK-funded partnership led by Liverpool City Council. The programme brings together local authorities, universities and industry partners to explore innovative approaches to decarbonising heat, power and transport systems, while helping to unlock investment in net zero projects.
Researchers are also advancing knowledge in areas critical to the transition to net zero, including geothermal energy, low-carbon technologies, sustainable energy generation and climate resilience.

Throughout Climate Action Week 2026, visitors to campus can explore the Stories of Sustainability photography exhibition in Abercromby Square. Showcasing climate-themed photographs submitted by staff, students and alumni from the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), as part of our annual Earth Day celebrations.
