Looking for a new way to stay active, meet people and make the most of student life? Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or you’ve never played before, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with sport at the University of Liverpool.
Sport Liverpool has more than 50 sports clubs to choose from, with clubs welcoming students of all abilities – so you can continue with a sport you already love or challenge yourself to try something completely new.
Here are eight sports to put on your radar this year.
🏈 American Football
Fancy trying something completely different? American Football combines speed, strength, teamwork and strategy, making it a great option if you enjoy fast-paced team sports.
You don’t need to have played before to get involved. The club welcomes students who are new to the sport as well as those with previous experience, giving you the chance to learn the game, develop your skills and meet new people along the way.
📣 Cheerleading and Dance
Think cheerleading is all about routines? Think again. Cheerleading and dance combines strength, flexibility, coordination, teamwork and performance, with plenty of opportunities to develop new skills.
Whether you’re already experienced or have never tried it before, joining a university cheerleading club can be a great way to get active while becoming part of a close-knit team.
🏐 Dodgeball
If you’re looking for something social, energetic and a little bit different, dodgeball could be the one for you.
It’s fast-paced, easy to pick up and all about teamwork, communication and quick reactions. It’s also a great way to meet people outside your course while getting your heart rate up.
⚽ Futsal
Love football but fancy trying something a little different? Futsal is a fast-paced, small-sided version of the game, played indoors.
With fewer players and a smaller pitch, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved, develop your ball skills and improve your speed and decision-making. It’s a great option whether you’re looking to compete or simply enjoy playing with other students.
🏐 Korfball
Never heard of korfball? That’s exactly why it could be worth trying.
A mixed-gender team sport, korfball combines elements of basketball and netball, with players working together to score by shooting a ball through a raised hoop. It’s energetic, tactical and highly team-focused – and something completely different if you’re looking to expand your sporting horizons.
🏓 Table Tennis
Fancy trying something fast-paced that you can pick up at any level? Table tennis is a great way to get active, improve your coordination and enjoy some friendly competition.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or have played before, the club offers a chance to develop your skills, meet other students and get involved in a sport that’s easy to fit around university life.
🥏 Ultimate Frisbee
Think throwing a frisbee is just a game for the park? Ultimate Frisbee takes it to another level.
The sport combines running, throwing, catching and tactical play, with teams working together to move the disc up the field and score. It’s energetic, accessible and a great way to try something you may never have considered before.
🎿 Ski and Snowboarding
You don’t have to be studying in the Alps to get involved in snow sports.
The Ski and Snowboarding Club offers students the opportunity to connect with others who enjoy being on the slopes, whether you’re already an experienced skier or snowboarder or simply keen to get involved with a new sport.
It could also be a great way to meet people who share your interests beyond campus.
Find your sport

You don’t need to be an expert to join a club. Every Sport Liverpool club accepts beginners, so don’t be put off if you’ve never tried the sport before.
Joining a sports club can be about much more than training and competition. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, develop skills, take part in social activities and find your community at university.
Many clubs also compete in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS), giving students the opportunity to represent Liverpool in university competitions.
