PGRs: Writing events and resources for you this November

November 2024 is academic writing month – WriteFest – and teams across the University are working together to provide a packed schedule of events and resources for researchers at any stage.

Whether you’re looking finish a thesis chapter, write a blog or submit a journal article, WriteFest 2024 is here to support you achieve you writing goals!

Coordinated by the Researcher Development and Culture team in The Academy, this year’s programme of events promises to be better than ever. During WriteFest 2024 there are masterclasses on writing abstracts and CVs, as well as workshops on combatting writer’s block, effective writing techniques for mid- and late-stage PGRs and more. You’ll be able to hear advice from a former editor of Nature and discover how writing without discipline can help you build writing into your daily routine.

Providing you with time, space and structure

Writing retreats can give you with the time and space to focus on your writing without external distractions interrupting you. Throughout WriteFest 2024 there are regular 2-hour online retreats, run twice a week by the Shut Up and Write group on Teams.

If you’re looking for longer then come along to the PGR day-long writing retreat held in-person on Thursday 28th November (10:30-17:00) to write in a supportive environment during structured writing sessions.

WriteFest across the University of Liverpool

There is so much going on across the University during WriteFest. Teams involved in this cross-departmental series of events include the Heseltine Institute, the Research Staff Association, the English Language Centre, Academic Development, Research and Partnerships, Output Development, the Library and KnowHow teams, as well as the PGR, Prosper and Research Staff teams within Researcher Development and Culture.

How to get involved with WriteFest 2024

  4. Access the Writing Resources Wakelet and explore over 40 separate writing-related resources from university-wide development events, including WriteFest and Making an Impact recorded workshops, blogs, playlists and self-directed activities.

Further opportunities for PGRs in 2024-2025

  • The Central PGR Programme: over 100 sessions delivered via online modules and resources, workshops, masterclasses, boot camps, webinars, Faculty Forums, practical applications and many more.
  • Three Minute Thesis: The Three Minute thesis (3MT®) is a prestigious competition which challenges doctoral candidates to give a compelling spoken presentation of their research to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes, using just one slide. The overall winner will represent the University of Liverpool at the National Vitae 3MT competition
  • PGR Development Canvas: access a wealth of online development resources, including self-paced modules tailored to every stage of the PGR process. All PGRs are automatically enrolled on registration, or PGRs can self-enrol using this link. PGRs can access the current version of the Development Needs Analysis (DNA) on this page.
  • The PGRDevNet: a network for all PGRs that publishes regular e-bulletins, runs events and activities, and provides a voice for PGRs within the research community.
