Recognising world-class research

A definition for Knowledge Exchange (KE) has been created to help recognise and reward world-class research.

KE is a strategic priority for staff and one of our five key themes, and as such, it is an important focus for academics. The motivation and rewards for best practice in KE are often found in the potential impacts that research can deliver, as well as the direct benefits for research projects and individual academics.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Jon Saunders said: “Despite the wide range of excellent KE activity across campus, there is a lack of shared understanding of what we mean by KE. This in itself is one of the first hurdles to overcome if we are to make significant progress in this field.”

The Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee has approved the definition which addresses the University’s requirements and provides a basis upon which the University can build KE plans and activities.

Definition

Knowledge Exchange (KE) supports the University’s research endeavours by gaining insights, contacts and other resources of value to the University.

Knowledge can be embodied in people, tangible products and processes, or more intangible forms.

KE involves transposing such knowledge between the University and other organisations, communities and individuals – thereby helping to deliver social, cultural or economic benefits.
