The winners of the Alan Beeston Prize and Evans Memorial Prize have been awarded to staff and students for the special contribution they have made to the University.
The Alan Beeston Prize is awarded to a member of staff who works within the Faculty of Science and is also a graduate of the University. It is made in memory of Dr Alan W Beeston who made and outstanding contribution to both the University and Convocation over many years. The winner is Dr Helen Hayward from the Department of Physics.
The Evans Memorial Fund was established from contributions made by friends and colleagues of Des Evans, a Senior Assistant Registrar at the University, his wife Carol, a mature undergraduate student, and their family, who were tragically killed in a road accident.
Prizes made from the Evans Memorial Fund are awarded in two categories. The first is for mature undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This year the award was shared between Brendan O’Leary, BA Combined Honours and Margaret Gilbert, BA English Language and Literature.
The second category is for members of the administrative, clerical and secretarial staff, to further their education or career development. The award was shared between five staff members – Peta Bulmer, Library; Val Fry, History; Robyn Middleton, SOCLAS and Rebecca Roberts-Achilleos and Claire Small, School of Combined Honours (HSS).
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Howard Newby, said: “I am delighted to make these awards on behalf of the University. It’s important that we recognise the contribution our staff and students make, whether it’s through rewarding excellence or supporting their professional development, and these awards do that. All concerned should be very proud.”
