University selected to join prestigious excellence ranking

The University has been selected to join the Excellence Group of the CHE ExcellenceRanking 2010.

The University and 129 other universities from across Europe have been placed in the excellence group based on the strength of their research-strong Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics departments, which have an international orientation for master’s and doctoral students.

Compiled by the non-profit Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE), the annual ranking is designed to make comparisons between the best research institutes in Europe for beginning master’s or doctoral students.

Eight criteria were important for selection, including number of publications, number of citations, student and staff mobility and presence of Erasmus Mundus master’s programmes or Marie-Curie projects. An additional deciding factor was whether researchers earned an ERC grant or Nobel Prize within their specialist area.

For the benefit of prospective students, the ranking also takes into account the judgements of current students regarding student conditions.

Detailed information about the ranking, which last year focused on the subjects of Economics, Psychology and Political Science, can be found at www.zeit.de/excellenceranking.
