The University has held its service of remembrance to honour the memory of staff and students who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars and other conflicts.
Held in the Victoria Gallery & Museum wreaths were laid at the two memorials commemorating those who died by Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Hoey and John Ryan from Facilities Management who has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Wreaths were also laid by the Royal Navy, the Army and Royal Air Force at the Chavasse memorial in Abercromby Square which commemorates Captain Noel Chavasse, the only soldier to be awarded the Victoria Cross twice in the First World War, and 15 others who were awarded the Victoria Cross and all born in the city.
The Last Post, used as a final farewell, was played by Johanna Hentze from the School of Music to start the two minutes’ silence at 11am and the three University Chaplains Father Ian McParland, Canon Bob Lewis and Reverend John Lansley presided over the service which was attended by members of the Military Education Committee, staff and students and members of the public.
