Competition helps hungry cash-strapped students

Masterchef Students

Judges Sue Spencer, Head of Student Services, Mark Fitzjones, Chef at the VGM and Rachael Gibson, a student at the University with the three finalists

The Financial Support Team, based in Student Support Services, has encouraged students to become more imaginative in the kitchen while on a budget.

Students were asked to devise a menu for four people costing no more than £5 in a ‘MasterChef’ style competition. The team received a large amount of applications and found it difficult to select just three finalists.

The final, held in the Victoria Gallery & Museum (VGM), saw the finalists prepare and cook their meal for the judges.

Caroline O’Connell, Financial Support Adviser, said: “The standard of cooking was exceptionally high but the judges eventually selected the winning dish of fiery bean burgers by third year Dentistry student Louise Bowler. She won £100 vouchers donated by Lakeland.”
