Professor Peter Weightman from the University’s Department of Physics and the Surface Science Research Centre has been awarded the 2011 British Vacuum Council (BVC) Senior Prize and John Yarwood Memorial Medal.
The awards are made annually based on nominations submitted to the BVC to a person of international standing who has made distinguished contribution to British Research in the field of vacuum science, surface science, thin films or related topics.
The presentation will be made at the 14th international conference on Applications of Surfaces and Interface Analysis which will be held in Cardiff between the 4 and 9 September. Peter will give an invited lecture on ‘The contribution of vacuum science to our understanding of real surfaces.’
He said: “I am very pleased to have received this award which is a recognition, not just of my work, but that of current and former members of my research group and our many collaborators.”
