TUC leader Brendan Barber has given the second talk in the Burning Issues lecture series where he set out an alternative recovery plan to the Government’s spending cuts.
During the lecture entitled In Place of Austerity, the audience of 200 local business representatives, academics, students and alumni heard Brendan Barber call on the Government to change course and adopt a plan B to get consumers spending again, businesses growing and bring the deficit down.
Mr Barber said: “The decisions the Government is taking now will shape our lives for a generation to come. But it’s clear that austerity is failing us all. I hope ministers find the courage to admit they’ve got something wrong and change course before it’s too late, because in place of austerity, we urgently need something better, fairer and more effective in delivering a real recovery.”
Other lectures in the Burning Issues series will be given by John Cridland, Director General CBI, Lord John Birt, former Director General BBC and Will Hutton, Executive Vice-Chair, The Work Foundation.
The lecture series is sponsored by Weightmans.
