Award-winning Irish writer, Fergal Keane, joined retired Army Commanding Officer, Colonel James Graeme Bryson, and world-renowned classical pianist, Stephen Hough, receiving honours at the University of Liverpool’s graduation ceremony.

Fergal Keane is a writer, journalist and broadcaster who has reported from some of the world’s most dangerous war zones. He joined the BBC as Northern Ireland correspondent in 1989, and went on to receive numerous honours including a BAFTA, the Orwell Prize for political writing, and OBE for services to journalism. He is currently Special Correspondent with BBC News covering international affairs.

Colonel James Graeme Bryson

University of Liverpool graduate, Colonel James Graeme Bryson, has had a distinguished career as a soldier, solicitor, judge, and as one of Her Majesty’s Commissioners of Taxes. He has held positions as Colonel and Commanding Officer of the 89th Field Brigade of the Territorial Army and Commanding Officer of the Liverpool Irish Regiment. He received the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery after being shot at in court during a bankruptcy trial and was made Citizen of Honour in 2009, following 70 years of service to the city and University.

Stephen Hough is a classical pianist, composer and writer who has performed with some of the world’s greatest orchestras. Born in Wirral, he started playing the piano aged five and later went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music and The Juilliard School in New York. He was recently named the winner of the 2012 Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist Award. Stephen has also received four Grammy nominations and eight Gramophone Magazine Awards.

The honorary degrees were conferred at the Metropolitan Cathedral on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 December.
