The University is to launch a scholarship programme for Masters students funded by ScottishPower.

The Fundación IBERDROLA, the charitable arm of ScottishPower’s parent company, is funding a number of scholarship and research grant programmes focussed on energy and environmental studies for the 2012/2013 academic year.

Professor Werner Hofer, Director of the University of Liverpool’s Stephenson Institute for Sustainable Energy, said: “As supplies of current fossil-based fuels diminish, the provision of energy is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. Researchers working together from across different disciplines will provide a new approach to developing new, cleaner and safer ways to produce energy.

“This new scholarship scheme will provide a great opportunity for students to work on projects that will have an impact on global industry, policy, and the way people live their lives. We are delighted to be working with ScottishPower on this exciting new initiative.”

Ann Loughrey, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at ScottishPower, said: “The scholarship programme was launched in 2010 as part of our commitment to addressing future skills in the energy industry. So far almost 20 students in the UK have benefited from funding as they pursue academic qualifications in this vital area of study.

“We believe that investing in skills development and education is an important contribution towards developing future skilled leaders and professionals equipped with the highest level of training for the industry.”

Scholarships will be available to apply for online from 31 January 2012. The deadline for applications is 29 February 2012. The scholarship meets full enrolment costs and provides a monthly living allowance of £1,200 to students in the UK. More details can be found at www.scottishpower.com/scholarships.
