The University has strengthened its research partnerships with institutions in South East Asia, including Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore), Hong Kong University (HKU) and The National Tsing-Hua University (NTHU, Taiwan).
A recent visit by the University to the institutions progressed plans to develop joint PhD programmes. The team discussed the establishment of a pilot scheme, involving students from the University’s School of Engineering, and Tsing-Hua to allow PhD students studying in common subjects from both universities to undertake research projects under joint supervision.
The students will spend two years at each institution and similar research schemes will, in time, be launched with HKU and NTU.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Professor Stephen Holloway and Liverpool colleagues met with partners in Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong to develop the programmes; he said: “These initiatives will offer students a fantastic opportunity to study with some of the world’s leading scientists. They have been developed under the new Liverpool International Graduate School. We’re aiming to internationalise our provision for PhD students and form mutually beneficial partnerships with leading institutions around the world.”
A further initiative, which also formed part of the trip, included an agreement with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) – a research institute in Singapore – that will enable PhD students at Liverpool to spend time at the one of their 14 research institutes covering a wide variety of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities
