Paul meets SIFE students

Paul Barry-Walsh (BA Economics and Economic History 1976), founder of Fredericks Foundation, spoke about three influences that he asserts need to be radically addressed in order for society as a whole to improve.
Earlier in the day, he met with University of Liverpool Management School’s SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) students to judge the SIFE annual Dragons Den Business Boss Final. The students also attended the lecture, receiving awards for their work and delivering a presentation to the 200-strong audience.
Fred Freeman’s daughter Hazel, opened the lecture with a moving account of her father’s work and poignantly, the lecture was held on what would have been his 91st birthday. Her book The Freeman Family Store was also available to buy.
Paul is a donor to the SIFE project and a member of the University’s Development Foundation.
Karen Brady, Head of Alumni and Acting Head of Development in Corporate Communications, said: “Alumni play a key part in the Management School’s mission of ‘learning to make a difference’ and one of the ways in which we encourage this is to speak to students providing practical, real life examples of business and management that will supplement their academic, theoretical studies.
“In all, 1,343 donors supported the University of Liverpool last year, contributing £2,284,538 to projects that support research, student experience and scholarship.”
The Lecture was part of the ‘festival of entrepreneurship’ held across the city in conjunction with the Global Entrepreneurship Congress which came to Liverpool earlier this month and attracted 2,800 guests from across the globe.
The Fred Freeman Philanthropy Lecture series was created in memory of the late Fred Freeman who received an Honorary Degree in 2007. It was established with a gift awarded by his family to the University through his charitable foundation and is intended to honour his lifetime of achievements – including the founding of payroll giving – by recognising, celebrating and encouraging philanthropy and the benefit it brings to society as a whole.
