The University of Liverpool’s Department of Philosophy and the Liverpool Biennial have organised a series of workshops to bring together artists, philosophers and scientists to explore the theme of this year’s Biennial, hospitality.
The first workshop, `Human Surface Skin’, will explore the scientific, artistic and philosophical perspectives on the phenomenon of skin as human surface as well as addressing the question of the boundaries of the human and the non-human.
Speakers include Professor John Hunt (above) from the University’s Ageing and Chronic Disease, artist, Paula Rosenkranz and philosopher, Robin Mackay. Professor Hunt , Head of the UK Centre for Tissue Engineering at the University, is enabling and supporting bioart concepts and installations. The Centre has an artist in residence, John O’Shea, who created art inspired by its work.
In the second workshop, ‘Around Ours’, Dutch artist, Jeanne van Heeswijk, writer Owen Hatherley and Jim Brown, principal consultant at Baker Brown Associateswill discuss hospitality and economy in the context of terraced housing and, in particular, they will explore what it means to live well.
This workshop will be held in The Bakery in Anfied where Jeanne is responsible for an imaginative Biennial project for dealing with empty properties and spaces in Liverpool. You can read a recent review of the initiative in the Guardian here.
The Liverpool Biennial is the largest international contemporary art festival in the UK and attracts over 600,000 visitors.
`Human Surface Skin’ takes place on Tuesday 3 July 2012, 2-5pm at the Victoria Gallery & Museum.
`Around Ours’ takes place on Wednesday 11 July, 3- 5pm at the Bakery in Anfield.
