Go Higher students graduate

Go Higher 2012

Students who successfully completed this year’s Go Higher programmes in Arts and Social and Environmental Sciences have celebrated their graduation.

The Go Higher programme, which is the University’s level 0 foundation course for mature students, has been running since 1999 and approximately 554 students have successfully completed the course. Students of all ages take part in the programme and the oldest so far is 72 years old.

The graduation ceremony at the University’s Sherrington Building was attended by 45 students and more than 200 relatives and friends, together with some of the graduating students from the University’s Step Forward programme – the preparatory course for Go Higher. Students were awarded a certificate and a number of special recognition awards were presented to students from both programmes. Executive Pro-Vice Chancellor Andrew Derrington, who officiated the ceremony, said: “The Go Higher programme is a fantastic way for people who don’t have traditional qualifications or who have been out of education for a while to develop the confidence, skills and independence needed for degree level study . The programme is designed to enable the learning process and let students discover the real meaning of higher education. Most students from this programme have gone on to further study here at Liverpool or at other universities.”

Previous graduates from the Go Higher programme have gone on to a wide range of university degrees including Sociology, Social Work, Law, Archaeology, Geography, Irish Studies, English Language and Literature, Politics, History, Popular Music, Business Studies and Environmental Studies.
