The University has hosted a delegation of Year 9 students from across the country as part of the Government’s Department of Education ‘Dux’ (Elite) award scheme.
More than 190 students and teachers visited the campus from 65 schools over three days.
Aimed at increasing awareness of higher education and student aspirations to continue to a Russell Group university, the event comprised visits to lectures and workshops designed to give a taste of teaching and learning at the University.
The workshops were presented by Graduate Advocates from the Educational Opportunities Team, who, having finished their studies, spoke about their recent experience at the University.
Professor Andrew Derrington, Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Humanities and Social Sciences, said: “I think it’s really important for these students to be ambitious and to make choices that will give them the best opportunities. It is also crucial that they understand that they should choose subjects that will stretch them.”
Pete Doyle, Project Officer in Educational Opportunities, said: “The positive feedback received throughout the day included comments from both students and teachers on how they had found the day very informative and how much fun it had been.”
