Students from the School of Architecture have been commended at the Homeless Shelter Design Competition at the Article 25 Student Chapter National Conference.
Article 25 is a charity which provides good design to those in need by connecting architects and design professionals with international development projects and disaster relief operations, and the Liverpool Student Chapter gives design students a chance to use their skills to benefit communities around the world.
The competition was to redesign the National Palace of Haiti which was demolished in the earthquake.
Professor Andre Brown, Head of the School of Architecture, said: “This was a great opportunity for the students to develop their design skills whilst showing an interest in Disaster Relief work which will add something unique to their portfolios.”
Their entry focused on engaging with the refugee settlement to establish a centre for the community within the palace alongside a sustainable system for future resettlement. They proposed redeveloping the settlement into smaller community units, encouraging a sense of ownership and enabling small ‘cottage’ industries to develop and provide families with a future beyond the camp.
