Dr Holly Rogers
Dr Holly Rogers, a lecturer in the School of Music has won a prestigious research scholarship from the US-UK Fulbright Commission.
The award has given Dr Rogers the opportunity to spend the summer in the United States, where she is working as a research scholar at San Francisco State University. Dr Rogers is investigating the use of music in the city’s galleries, as part of a book project on contemporary video art-music. She is also teaching a module on sound for document filmmaking.
Presented annually, the Fulbright Scholars Awards are offered to exceptional post doctoral academics who are considered to be leaders in their field. Applicants undergo a rigorous selection process, to win funding and support which allows them to pursue research, and/or lecture in the United States, for between three months and a year. Considered to be one of the most distinguished award programmes worldwide, more Fulbright alumni have gone on to win Nobel Prizes than any other academic programme.
Dr Rogers is one of 21 Fulbright Scholars from the United Kingdom who received awards this year.
Commenting on the award, Dr Rogers said: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to pursue my research interests at San Francisco State University. This Fulbright Scholarship not only provides the resources to kick start my new project, it also allows me to get to grips with another education system.”
Dr Rogers joined the University of Liverpool in 2006, and has been pursuing her research on music in film, as well as lecturing at the School of Music on audiovisual media. Her research is concerned primarily with music in film and she has published papers on the soundtracks to Werner Herzog’s films, Bill Viola’s video installations and the depiction of Beethoven in Hollywood cinema. Current work includes an exploration of the collaboration between Nam June Paik and Charlotte Moorman, engagement with the music in early avant-garde film and the madrigals of Gesualdo.
A number of staff and students at the University have previously been awarded Fulbright scholarships.
