Two members of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were speakers at the National Assembly for Wales Women in Public Life Conference.

Laura McAllister, Professor of Governance at the University of Liverpool Management School chaired the Women in Public Life -should society do more to encourage women’s participation? workshop and Professor Karen Ross, Communication and Media , School of the Arts, was on the panel for the Women in the media – how are they portrayed? workshop.

Laura and Karen discussed the results of several research studies which they have undertaken, variously focused on women’s relationships to and strategies for working with the media, and on issues such as professional development training and mentoring for women politicians.

Rosemary Butler, Presiding Officer of the National Assembly, said: “Laura and Karen did an excellent job in discussing their research with our Assembly Members (AMs), providing a range of practical strategies which AMs can use in further developing their own communications profiles.

“I believe that the workshops will have a long-lasting impact in relation to changing the way in which we think about and use media, especially social media.”

Other speakers included Minister Jane Hutt, Leader of the House and Kirsty Davies, Chair of the Women’s Equality Network Wales.
