Dr Tom Whittaker from the Department of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies has been appointed as the as the inaugural Franklin-Morris International Scholar.
Established by the University of Liverpool and the University of Georgia, the Franklin-Morris International Scholar is named in honour of two of the signatories to the Declaration of Independence in 1776 ; Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) and (Liverpool born) Robert Morris (1734-1806).
The award will give Dr Whittaker the opportunity to spend a month at the University of Georgia, at the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, where he will teach Space, Movement and Identity in Hispanic Film and carry out his ongoing research on sound in Spanish and Latin American film.
Dr Whittaker, said: “I’m excited to be given the opportunity to pursue my research and teaching interests at the University of Georgia this Summer. Like Liverpool, UGA has a renowned and interdisciplinary research culture. It’s a dynamic institution with an excellent reputation, and I’m looking forward to working with their students and academics alike.”
A specialist in Hispanic Film Studies, Dr Whittaker is the author of A Producer of Landscapes: The Films of Elías Querejeta (Cardiff: U. of Wales Press, 2011). He has also published articles in the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, International Journal of Cultural Studies, Journal of British Cinema and Television, Studies in European Cinema, and Studies in Hispanic Cinemas.
The new scholars programme further strengthens the relationship between the University of Liverpool and the UGA; the institutions already have a teaching exchange programme arrangement, and a new institution-wide undergraduate student exchange programme will be begin later this year.
