The University of Liverpool’s new £23 million Central Teaching Laboratories (CTL) have won `Best Facilities’ at the 2013 Guardian University Awards.
The CTL’s innovative design in bringing together all scientific teaching provision for the physical sciences under one roof was described by judges as “truly groundbreaking”.
The award was announced at a ceremony in London hosted by BBC education correspondent Reeta Chakrabarti .
Significant investment
Steve Dickson, Director of Facilities Management who accepted the award, said: “We are delighted that CTL has been recognised in this way at the Guardian University Awards.
“The University has invested significantly in facilities as part of its commitment to providing world-class student experience and research facilities. The CTL ensures that Liverpool’s teaching provision in the physical sciences is first-rate and will meet the needs of the next generation of scientists in the country. ”
The CTL brings together students from a variety of science-based degree programmes in one state-of-the art facility
The CTL, which opened in September 2012, is built around a central atrium and has seven laboratories that can accommodate 1,000 students. It includes £5.6 million of state-of-the art laboratory equipment and supports teaching modules and a variety of degree programmes including physics, environmental sciences, chemistry and archaeology as well as promoting interdisciplinary science.

The Guardian University Awards, running for the first time this year, celebrate the best of Britain’s universities and act as a benchmark for excellence across the higher education sector.
