Award winning journalist and Manufacturing Editor for the Financial Times, Peter Marsh recently visited the University to talk to leading academics and industrialists about the shape of 21st Century manufacturing.
The global manufacturing industry has changed dramatically in recent decades, with the emergence of China and India as prime locations for low-cost manufacturing and the declining production from ‘old economies’ in the USA, UK, Germany and Japan. This new industrial era has the potential and opportunity to revitalise many parts of global manufacturing as well as bringing with it social and economic benefits.
Peter Marsh has explored the 250 years history of manufacturing and examined the characteristics and future of this industrial revolution that is taking place right now, in his new book ‘The New Industrial Revolution: the Shape of 21st Century manufacturing’.
Global manufacturing
Invited by the School of Engineering under the EPSRC Shaping Capability Programme, his lecture focused on the central thesis of his book, exploring and discussing the key changes in manufacturing and the driving forces behind them. He also offered his analysis on global manufacturing from politics and the recent financial crisis to the way forward for the UK to maintain a stronghold in the changing scenario.
Professor Bernard Hon, an expert in Manufacturing Systems, who organised the event, said: “We are honoured that the University of Liverpool was chosen by Peter Marsh to be the only location outside of London where he has delivered his lecture on the new industrial revolution.
The calibre of senior industrialists and academics who attended Peter’s lecture highlights how valuable, relevant and influential his insight into the future of manufacturing is.”

The next event being organised by the EPSRC Shaping Capability Programme is the ‘ICT for Manufacturing’ workshop on Friday 15 March, 9.30am – 2pm.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays an important role in the UK industry and effective integration of ICT with design and manufacturing can bring dramatic benefits. The workshop aims to bridge the gap between ICT and manufacturing by bringing together experts in academia and industry and to stimulate discussion and new ideas.
