The University of Liverpool is one of six Russell Group universities that have exceeded targets for supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds, according to the latest report from OFFA and HESA.

OFFA and HEFCE’s Joint Monitoring Report for 2011-12 details sector and institutional investment in access measures and measures the bursary holders at each institution.

Liverpool’s expenditure on bursaries and additional outreach activity increased from £30.2m in 2010-11 to £33.1m in 2011-12. Around 32% of students receive some type of financial support from the University.

Exceeding benchmarks

The University exceeds its benchmarks for the recruitment of students from Low Participation Neighbourhoods, and from the State Schools and Colleges sector. Whilst slightly behind target for the recruitment of students from National Socio-Economic Classification (NS-SEC) 4-7, the institution still performs well.

Paul Redmond, Head of Careers and Employability said: “We welcome the report from HEFCE and OFFA and the recognition it gives to the work the University is undertaking towards widening access and participation to higher education.

Widening Participation
”Widening Participation of under-represented groups in Higher Education is central to our strategic vision and we are justifiably proud of achievements in this area. Despite our excellent track record in this area we are far from complacent and have set greater challenges around outcomes, evaluation and student success, as part of our 2014 Access Agreement.”

The report focuses on the final year before tuition fees were increased to £9, 000 per year in 2012/13.
