Viewpoint: New food labelling system

Interior block 3

A new consistent system of front-of-pack food labelling is to be introduced: A combination of colour coding and nutritional information will be used to show how much fat, salt and sugar and how many calories are in each product.

Professor Simon Capewell from the Institute of Psychology, Health and Society:

“This new initiative represents an excellent step forward but it is only a first step and it may save a few hundred lives. If the Government really wants to take more effective action then it should introduce a 20% duty on sugary drinks, a removal of `industrial’ transfats from food and mandatory, not voluntary, salt removal. This would save 20,000 lives.”
