Apprenticeship programme launches

Apprentice-1w

The University will offer ten paid 12 week placements in a variety of environments

The University of Liverpool is launching a new pre-apprenticeship programme in partnership with Liverpool City Council and City of Liverpool College.

The programme will commence on the 16th September offering a 24-week pre-apprenticeships programme to 30 individuals, 16 and 17 years of age, who are ‘Not in Employment, Education or Training’ (NEET), giving them the opportunity to gain valuable skills and enhance their employability.

12 week course

Young people who are accepted onto the programme will take part in a 12-week course to improve their employability skills, Maths and English at City of Liverpool College, before either moving onto the pre-apprenticeship scheme at the University or going onto a Continuing Education Course at the College. Learners who are not placed at the University will receive support and guidance from staff at the college to help them apply for other apprenticeship vacancies, jobs and training.

”In addition to the apprenticeships already offered at the University this is a great opportunity for young people hoping to get work experience and skills which will help them to progress into a career”
The University will be offering 10 paid 12 week placements in areas such as Facilities Management, HR, Corporate Communications, Finance and the Central Teaching Hub’s Laboratories and the School of Physical Sciences Mechanical Workshop.

Commenting on the launch of the new programme, Steve Plant from the University of Liverpool HR department said: “In addition to the apprenticeships already offered at the University this is a great opportunity for young people hoping to get work experience and skills which will help them to progress into a career.  If it is successful we are hoping to expand the opportunities available next year.”

A recent Connexions report showed that there were more than 4,000 NEET’s in the Liverpool city region at the end of 2012.
