A student from the Department of Mathematical Sciences has been shortlisted in the 2013 SET Awards.
Rebecca Simms, who is studying Mathematics, is nominated for her project entitled ‘Pricing and Simulations of Catastrophe Risk Bonds’.
The Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year Awards are Europe’s most important awards for science and engineering undergraduates. Supported by industry and leading scientific and technical institutions, they provide a showcase for educational excellence, recognising the exceptional achievements of both students and universities.

Rebecca’s supervisor, Dr Thanasi Pantelous from the Institute for Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, said: “It’s fantastic to see one of our project students to be shortlisted in the most important competition for undergraduates in Science, Engineering and Technology in Europe. There were around 500 entries this year, and it is a very impressive achievement for Rebecca to have reached the final three in Mathematics.
“SET Award in Mathematics are supported and judged by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and the London Mathematical Society (LMS), and are regarded as a showcase of current and future stars in this discipline. I’m very pleased for Rebecca.”
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London at the end of September, before an audience of technology students, academics, senior industry executives; as well as senior figures from government, scientific and technical institutions and the media.
