The University of Liverpool has moved up two places in the 2013 Times Higher Education (THE) World ranking.

Liverpool is ranked 169th, up from 171 last year. The result places Liverpool 21 in the Russell Group, ahead of Newcastle, Cardiff, and Belfast.

In total, 49 institutions in the UK were listed in the Top 400 with Liverpool ranked 26th.  UK universities that climbed the table also included Queen Mary, University of London, up 31 to 114; University of Glasgow, up 22 to 117; and King’s College London, up 19 to 38.

The Global rankings use 13 separate performance indicators to examine a university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. All data are collected, analysed and verified by global data provider Thomson Reuters.

The California Institute of Technology tops the rankings for the third year running, whilst Oxford maintains its position in second place, alongside Harvard University.
