Infection and Global Health Day 2013

More than 200 researchers attended the Victoria Gallery and Museum for the third annual Infection and Global Health Day.

The event, hosted by the Institute of Infection and Global Health (IGH), featured a programme of talks and posters, delivering all the latest research from the Institute’s postgraduate and postdoctoral students working in the fields of clinical infection, microbiology and immunology, epidemiology and population health, and infection biology.

Broad range

The presentations covered a broad range of subjects from the dynamics of HIV infection, to the latest developments in food safety, and new tools for ‘One Health’ research and policy development, among many others.

Following the day’s talks, Institute Director Professor Tom Solomon delivered a review of the last 12 months, including highlights such as the launch of the Veterinary Academic Clinical Fellowship scheme and the renewal of the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Major Overseas programme.

Professor Sarah Cleaveland, from the University of Glasgow, then delivered the Tony Hart Memorial Lecture and talked about her research in Africa to reduce the burden of rabies.

Sarah said: “It was an honour to be invited to be part of the day. I was very impressed by the scope of the work going on at the Institute, the positive and enthusiastic environment and the quality of the presentations.”

Awards

The event was concluded with the presentation of awards. Young Investigator of the Year was picked up by Georgina Crayford, Dr Joanne Turner was named Post-Doctoral Researcher of the Year, Researcher of the Year was awarded to Dr Nicola Williams and Clare Kelly and Debbie Howarth were recognised in the Professional Services awards.

The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Patrick Hackett said: “A day like this is really special, not just for the academics but also for the whole professional services team. It gives us a chance to see the real products of all our work. I especially enjoyed giving out the Awards for the Professional Services staff who can be rightly proud of all their efforts.”
